Abstract: In pursuit of novel methodologies for food preservation, we report an exploratory study into the pickling of cucumbers using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄). This volatile, fuming liquid has been underutilised in the brining arts. Our investigation reveals that TiCl₄’s hydrolysis yields a spontaneously exothermic brine with potentially antimicrobial properties and an indescribable umami profile.
