A Quantitative Approach to Fostering Social Cohesion

Abstract: Many academic groups struggle to achieve strong social cohesion amongst their members. In response, one approach that has been adopted by many institutions is the organization of regular social hours. However, while the characteristics of the locations which host such events undoubtedly impact attendance and cohesive potential, this relationship remains woefully understudied. We developed a standardized point count system to systematically collect attendance data at a weekly happy hour with a rotating location.
